Intentional Imbalance

Have you heard the term ‘Intentional Imbalance’?

I was recently reading a book called, 12 week year, and it highlights a wonderful concept called “Intentional imbalance”.

We are at the brink of the new year and all of us will promise to change and follow some resolutions.

The moment you start chasing a goal, and whenever you do, you need to create this imbalance of skewing more time, effort, energy toward that particular goal.

Basically purposefully focusing your limited resources on a specific area of your life or work for a limited period to achieve significant progress.

For instance if you are chasing a health goal, make sure that you are spending more time and energy on health compared to work, leisure or any other area.

Lets once acknowledge that it is theoretical to assume that one is going to find perfect balance in all areas of life, all the time. There always is imbalance, only this time you are planning, designing and controlling the imbalance.

The next few months a lot of us will go into trying to achieve our sales goals for year ending in March.
If it is really important to you, then create that imbalance.

Hope Im not kicking up a controversy here like Narayan Murthy did with 14 hour work days (BTW I stand by him because I did it in my early days and it helped me to grow faster) but that’s a good example of Intentional Imbalance.

Have you ever created imbalance intentionally or unintentionally and seen benefits? I’d love to hear and know more.
